Angie Nishio-Lucar

Dr. Angie Nishio-Lucar is a Transplant Nephrologist and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. She is the Medical director of the Living Kidney Donor Program as well as the Program Director of the Transplant Nephrology fellowship. She was awarded the Department of Medicine clinical excellence award in 2018 and the Outstanding Patient Experience award in 2020 and 2021. Her core areas of academic interest include racial and ethnic disparities in kidney transplant, living donation, social media and social networks to enhance living kidney donation as well as diversity and equity of the health care workforce. She collaborates within the Department of Medicine to promote diversity in training, reduce unconscious bias among the faculty as well as fostering programs for community outreach and engagement. At the national level, she has served as OPTN/UNOS region 11 representative to the Living Donor Committee; she chairs the AST LCDOP Education Subcommittee and is a member of the ASN Diversity and Equity Committee. Dr. Nishio-Lucar works to create awareness of existing socioeconomic disparities for those pursuing kidney transplantation and living donation with the goal of making transplant accessible to everyone in the state of Virginia. Through her work, the transplant center has successfully transplanted patients who were denied access to transplant elsewhere while maintaining excellent outcomes.
