Dr. Schneider received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1991. He continued studies at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow in protein design. After which, he joined the faculty at the University of Delaware building a program in biomaterials. As Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UD, he was recruited in 2010 to the National Cancer Institute, Center for Cancer Research to serve as Chief and build their new Chemical Biology Laboratory. His independent research develops materials for use in the local delivery of therapeutics and as antibacterial agents. He is particularly interested in peptide-based hydrogels formed by self-assembly. His work spans materials design, synthesis, nano- and bulk mechanical characterization, cell-material interactions, biocompatibility, and assessment of performance efficacy. His work establishes how material composition and structure influences material function, which lays the foundation to ultimately translate materials to the clinic.
