Dr. Eyestone received his PhD in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked assisted reproductive technologies in cattle, followed by a post-doc in biochemistry at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He worked for two years for as a Research Scientist at GenPharm Europe in the Netherlands, during which he and his team generated the world's first transgenic cattle. He continued in this vein at PPL Therapeutics in the US, making the first transgenic cattle expressing human pharmaceutical proteins in their milk, and some of the first cloned cattle using techniques developed by PPL's parent company in Scotland to make Dolly the Sheep. Dr. Eyestone then joined the faculty of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, where he worked on genetic modification techniques for making prion disease resistant cattle, and techniques for making induced pluripotent stem cells in cattle and pigs. He co-founded and co-directed the Graduate Program in Regenerative Medicine at Virginia Tech and was Director of the Virginia-Wake Forest Center for Veterinary Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Eyestone is currently Associate Director of Xenotransplantation Research & Development at Revivicor, Inc., a company focused on making genetically edited pig organs to alleviate the shortage of human organs for therapeutic allotransplantion.
